OTTAWA, ON, Sept. 25, 2026 /CNW/ -- Now that the Belleville shooter's motivations have been confirmed, Charlotte-Anne Malischewski, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, issues the following statement:

Emerging details confirm that the courage of the officers protecting those gathered at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur narrowly prevented mass casualties in this targeted antisemitic attack.

This is a frightening reminder that antisemitism continues to fester in Canada.  

Hate strikes at the core of our values. When it manifests in our communities, it threatens public safety, reinforces prejudice, and dehumanizes individuals.

Jewish people have the right to gather, worship and live openly without fear. We stand with the Jewish community in Belleville and across Canada.

Everyone in Canada has a responsibility to confront antisemitism wherever and whenever it appears.
