OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 22, 2026
OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 22, 2026 /CNW/ -- NAV CANADA today released its financial results for the year ended August 31, 2026.
In fiscal 2026, NAV CANADA maintained financial stability while continuing to invest in the safety, resilience and long-term sustainability of Canada's air navigation system. The year was marked by a complex operating environment, with geopolitical tensions, shifting traffic patterns, inflationary pressures and broader economic uncertainty influencing costs and business operations across the organization. Despite these headwinds, the Company delivered safe and reliable service and supported customers through periods of elevated demand. NAV CANADA also advanced key strategic initiatives focused on operational performance, modernization and financial sustainability.
"Fiscal 2026 tested the resilience of the aviation industry in many ways," said Mark Cooper, President and CEO. "Against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty, cost pressures and evolving traffic demands, our employees worked closely with industry partners to keep Canada's air navigation system operating safely, reliably and efficiently. These results reflect NAV CANADA's ability to balance investment, operational performance and financial sustainability in a dynamic operating environment. As NAV CANADA marks 30 years of service, we remain focused on supporting Canada's aviation sector through continued investment in our people, our infrastructure and long-term financial sustainability."
In fiscal 2026, the Company saw an increase in air traffic levels, as measured in weighted charging units1, of 1.7% as demand for air travel remained strong. The Company's revenue was $1,903 million in fiscal 2026, which is $47 million higher than fiscal 2025, due to higher weighted charging units and the increase in customer service charge rates effective January 1, 2025.
The Company ended the year with strong liquidity reserves, including a cash and short-term investment balance of $458 million. Positive free cash flow2 of $14 million was generated in fiscal 2026 as compared to $105 million in fiscal 2025, reflecting our increased investment in staffing, training capacity and our infrastructure.
The rate stabilization account shortfall balance reduced by $30 million in fiscal 2026 to a shortfall balance of $30 million as of August 31, 2026. The remaining shortfall balance is expected to be recovered from customers through future service charges.
NAV CANADA made meaningful progress on several strategic priorities during fiscal 2026. In response to elevated traffic demand, the Company implemented targeted staffing, scheduling and operational initiatives that contributed to an approximately 85% reduction in NAV CANADA-attributable delays at Canada's four busiest airports during the summer travel season. These improvements were achieved while continuing to invest in training capacity, infrastructure and modernization initiatives that support long-term operational resilience.
During the fourth quarter, NAV CANADA completed the divestiture of its investment in Aireon Holdings LLC while maintaining a strategic relationship through a new service agreement designed to preserve the safety and efficiency benefits of space-based surveillance.
Following customer consultation, revised service charges came into effect on September 1, 2026, supporting continued investment in safety, service delivery and modernization, while facilitating the gradual replenishment of the Rate Stabilization Account (RSA).
Looking ahead, the Company remains focused on operational excellence, modernization and long-term financial sustainability in support of Canada's aviation sector.

(1) | Weighted charging units represent a traffic measure that reflects the number of billable flights, aircraft size and distance flown in Canadian airspace and is the basis for movement-based service charges, which comprise the vast majority of the Company's revenue. |
(2) | Free cash flow is a non-GAAP financial measure used by the Company to enhance the overall understanding of its financial and operating performance. Non-GAAP financial measures do not have any standardized meaning prescribed by IFRS and therefore may not be comparable to similar measures presented by other issuers. The Company defines free cash flow as cash generated from operations, less capital expenditures (net of government grants received), equity related investments, principal payments of lease liabilities and income tax payments. Management places importance on this indicator as it assists in measuring the impact of its investment program on the Company's financial resources and provides users with a more stable indication of the Company's ability to meet its debt obligations and continue to invest in the air navigation system. |
